South America

Cerro Aconcagua

Elevation: 22,840 feet / 6962 meters
Optimal months to Climb: December to February

Number of Days to Climb: 14 to 17

Risks and Conditions: Because Aconcagua is the highest mountain in the world outside of the Himalayas, obviously altitude is a major concern. Moving up too fast could be a problem; the challenge is actually not moving up every day. Acclimating days spaced out to suit your expedition is the key. Weather, Cold Temperatures, and Mountain Sickness are all a concern. Be patient and climb when safe.
Summary: Logistics are the key here. It is accepted to use the mules to carry extra gear from the trailhead to Plaza de Mulas (and the equivalent on other routes). It takes you 2 to 3 days to get there. Then the real climbing starts as you still have almost 9,000 feet to the summit. The economy here is such that everything is inexpensive. Take a few days for travel in Argentina and Chile.

Qualifications: High altitude climbing experience would certainly help here. Proper gear and training is needed.
